The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (AAPD) recommends that children start seeing their dentist when their first teeth arrive or by age one, whichever comes first.
At Desai Dental Care, we welcome children starting at age six. If you have concerns early on, Dr. Desai can provide an examination and refer you to a pediatric dentist if your child has specific concerns.
Understanding Children's Dental Care
Parents should begin brushing their little one's teeth as soon as they arrive with a pea-sized amount of toothpaste that's safe to swallow and a soft-bristled brush designed for infants. You can incorporate fluoride toothpaste into their brushing routine once they can spit, around age three.
You'll need to assist your child in brushing and flossing their teeth until around the age of seven or eight.
Dr. Desai may recommend fluoride treatments after teeth cleanings to help strengthen and protect your child's teeth from decay and cavities. He may also suggest dental sealants to protect their teeth against tooth decay.
Dental sealants cover the chewing surfaces of molars with a thin protective coating that keeps plaque and bacteria from causing tooth decay and cavities.
